Message from the Vice President

On fixtures, friendship, and the diplomacy that nobody had to arrange.

Every friendship fixture we play is a small piece of diplomacy that no ministry had to arrange.

My responsibility at LION covers tournaments and our relationships abroad, and I have come to think of them as the same job. A fixture is simply an excuse for people to spend five hours together; what happens in those five hours is what endures.

We now maintain standing arrangements with clubs in eleven countries. LION members play at member rates when they travel, and we host visiting sides here — showing them courses they did not know existed, in a country most of them had never considered as a golf destination.

The Embassy Friendship Cup, played each November in Dhaka, has become the fixture I am proudest of. Nine missions fielded teams last season. Nobody negotiated anything. But a great deal was understood, and several of those relationships have since produced invitations, sponsorships and reciprocal visits that no formal approach would have achieved.

If you are reading this from outside Bangladesh, consider it a standing invitation. Write to us, and we will arrange your golf.
